Nueva Gerona

Nueva Gerona is a city in the north of the Cuban island Isla de la Juventud . It is the capital of the Isla de la Juventud Special Administrative Region. 69,976 people live in the city itself, while the entire island has 84,751 inhabitants (2012 census).
Nueva Gerona was founded in 1830 by American pioneers. There is still an American cemetery in the city today. The former Presidio Modelo prison , now a museum, is three kilometers east of the city center .
