Nursing Interventions Classification

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nursing Interventions Classification ( NIC , German care measures classification ) is a classification used to describe care actions of professional nurses.

history

Research on the NIC began in 1987. It was and is carried out by the Center for Nursing Classification at The University of Iowa College of Nursing , which also developed the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC).

The development of the intervention classification took place in 4 phases:

  • 1987–1992 Construction of the classification: Existing textbooks were viewed, care measures were viewed, analyzed and divided into groups
  • 1990–1995 Construction of the taxonomy : The groups were grouped according to their dependency and classified into the various levels of abstraction
  • 1993–1997 Clinical tests and refinements: Usability and validity were checked.
  • 1996 up to now use and refinement: use and further development as well as linking with NANDA-I. Development of the fair value deposit

NIC describes nursing measures and is integrated into an overall nursing classification through linikings with NANDA-I (nursing diagnoses) and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) (outcomes) in order to be able to map the various aspects of the nursing process

Scope and structure

The fourth version of the taxonomy of the Nursing Interventions Classification is currently available. It is essentially divided into three levels of abstraction:

  • The upper level with seven domains ,
  • the middle level with thirty classes,
  • the lower level with 542 maintenance measures.

Each nursing measure was also assigned a unique notation so that the NIC can be used in computerized hospital information systems (HIS). It was precisely for this purpose that the NIC was registered with the HL7 in 2000 . The computerized application also enables statistical evaluations for questions from nursing science and quality management .
