Nyeri is a city in the southern center of Kenya with 130,562 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2005) and is located about 100 kilometers north of Nairobi at the foot of the Aberdares in the sight of Mount Kenya . The former garrison is now the capital of the county of the same name . Until its dissolution it was the administrative center of the Central Province . Most of the people who live here are from the Kikuyu people .

In March 1990 Nyeri was raised to the seat of the Archdiocese of Nyeri .

In Nyeri is Paxtu , the former home of Robert Baden-Powell , founder of the Boy Scouts , who spent the last years of his life here and is buried with his wife Olave Baden-Powell in the city's cemetery. Today it is a museum and belongs to the Hotel Outspan , the starting point for the famous Treetops Tree Hotel , where the British Queen Elizabeth II found out about her father's death in 1952 .

education

The Kimathi University College of Technology is located in Nyeri and has held the rank of university since 2007 . From its opening in 1978 to 2007, the Kimathi Institute of Technology was designated as a college . In addition to the main campus in Meru, the Kenya Methodist University operates a further, small campus in Nyeri.

Healthcare

The Archdiocese of Nyeri runs the Gikondi Hospital in the city .
