Oathbreaker is a Belgian blackgaze and post-black metal band from Ghent , founded in 2008.

history

The band was founded in 2008 and consisted of the guitarist Lennart Bossu, the bassist Gilles Demolder, the drummer Ivo Debrabandere and the singer Caro Tanghe. Shortly thereafter, a first self-titled EP was released . The group then signed a record deal with Deathwish Inc. , which in 2011 saw the release of their debut album Mælstrøm . After another album in 2013 under the name Eros | Anteros , the third album Rheia followed in 2016 . Wim Coppers can be heard as the new drummer on the latter. However, Debrabanderes departure was not officially announced until two weeks after the album was released, with reasons given both personal and health. Coppers had been friends with the band for a long time. Years ago, Oathbreaker and his old band Rise and Fall held a tour together, and Coppers also plays with Gilles in the Wiegedood group .

style

James Christopher Monger of Allmusic noted that the band was mainly influenced by screamo , post-punk , shoegazing , sludge and black metal . In his review of Mælstrøm Volkmar Weber from Rock Hard wrote that the album “finds a balance between the past and the modern” and that it is “ metal without a cowl smell or hardcore without a raised index finger”. The screeching vocals of Karo occasionally remind of Black Metal. In a later issue, Weber reviewed Eros | Anteros, describing the music as an aggressive mix of black metal and hardcore punk and making a comparison with Kvelertak . The group also occasionally incorporate elements from shoegazing. The album is suitable for fans of both Satyricon and Mogwai . Melanie Aschenbrenner from Metal Hammer assigned Rheia to post and black metal. Here there is clear vocals that sound “crooked and crooked” so that she cannot understand the comparisons to Chelsea Wolfe at the time. However, the vocals offer a mixture of vulnerability and aggression, while the instruments are dynamic in terms of volume. After listening to it several times, it became clear that the group was more than just Deafheaven - epigones . FUZE Magazine listed Rheia as one of the top 5 albums in the November 2016 issue and called it "one of the most exciting releases of autumn 2016".
