Občina ( plural : občine ) is the Slovenian name for union communities in the former Yugoslavia . In Slovenia today it stands for the municipalities of the country.

Slovenia is divided into 212 občines , eleven of which are municipalities .

The občine currently form the second administrative level directly below the state as a whole.

On June 22, 2008, 57% of voters voted in a referendum for a government proposal to divide the country into 13 provinces . The turnout was only 11%.

The corresponding expression in Croatian and Bosnian is Općina , in Serbian and Macedonian Opština ( written Општина in Cyrillic ).
