Characteristic

  • Narrow valley course (gorge) with narrow terraces and steep slopes (partly directly to the Enns) from the state border with Styria to Steyr. In the area of the flysch zone in the north, valley widening with wider river terraces.
  • Only very small-scale forest areas, mainly used as spruce forests . Ash-rich forests, often along streams . Alluvial forests are only developed locally and in small areas.
  • Almost continuous power plant chain with six power plants , no fish passes . As a result, there is largely a lack of flowing water dynamics. Fine-grained landings with willow vegetation in the storage spaces. Debris dumps from landfill material from the reservoirs.
  • The mouths of the brooks from the surrounding area have been heavily influenced by regulation and dam activity, including several huts and walkways here.
  • Intensive use of grassland in the valley area, increased arable farming in the north . In some places there are still large populations of fruit trees, otherwise the valley area is often structureless. At the edges of the terraces and the sloping edges of the lime-semi-arid lawn and extensive pastures, reforestation pressure is high.
  • Alternating appearance of the cormorant .
  • Larger localities in the area of flattening and valley widening with a tendency to sprawl almost in the entire valley area with the exception of the narrow valley stretches. Eisen Straße (B115) on the right, railway on the left bank of the Enns.
  • Warm valley location.
