The Oberaarjochhütte is a refuge of the Swiss Alpine Club in the Bernese Alps ( Switzerland ).
Location and operation
The hut is located on the steep southwest flank of the Oberaarjoch at 3256 m between the Galmigletscher and Oberaargletscher in the canton of Valais . The current building with 56 beds is an extension of the old hut which previously had room for 32 people.
The hut is operated by the Biel section of the Swiss Alpine Club and is manned with brief interruptions from March to September.
history
A previous hut of unknown year of construction and with about 12 beds was transported to the foot of the Finsteraarhorn in 1905 after the construction of the Oberaarjochhütte and was the first Finsteraarhornhütte to be installed at its current location. The old hut has served as the Finsteraarhornhütte's winter room since 1933.
Approach and tours
The hut is relatively remote by alpine conditions and can only be reached via glacier tours . The shortest ascent is from Berghaus Oberaar in 5 hours ( Grimselpass 6.5 hours). Via the Studer Glacier, until it joins the Fiescher Glacier and then following it upwards, you get to the Finsteraarhornhütte or continue via Grünhornlücke to Konkordiaplatz. The transition to the Lauteraarhütte is also possible .
Due to the central location in the eastern Bernese Alps, many mountains in the area are accessible, the Oberaarhorn is the local mountain , further destinations are Studerhorn , Wasenhorn , and Finsteraarhorn .
