Chief quartermaster

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Senior Quartermasters were the heads of the individual departments (in the rank of general) in the Prussian Great General Staff and in the General Staff of the Army of the Wehrmacht , and in both World Wars they were the heads of army supply (today logistics ) at the army high command .

Concept formation

The term can be derived from the root quarter [(old) French. quartier] as part of an army camp , also meaning quarter. In the military, quarter stands for the accommodation of troops in barracks or private houses (billeting). The location quarter is the garrison or the location.

introduction

The introduction of the position was necessary in order to relieve the Chief of the General Staff from the tasks of supervising the work of the ever increasing departments of the General Staff. In times of peace, several of these departments were each subordinate to a senior quartermaster. At the same time, the senior quartermasters were supposed to prepare for use in the war as chief of the general staff at the high command of an army . The senior quartermaster was designated the quartermaster general . A previous designation of the Oberquartiermeister was Quartermaster General Lieutenant.

Further ranks

In addition to these senior quartermasters in the general staff, there was also the position of quartermaster or second general staff officer in the individual troops . Quartermaster-general is the name of the general staff officer closest to the chief of the general staff in individual armies .
