Oceanside is a city in San Diego County in the US state of California . It is the third largest city in San Diego County with 167,086 inhabitants ( 2010 census ). The urban area has a size of 107.7 km². Oceanside is about 55 kilometers north of San Diego and 130 kilometers south of Los Angeles on Interstate 5 and California State Route 76.

Oceanside is mainly separated from the neighboring town of Carlsbad to the southeast by the Buena Vista Lagoon .

history

Originally settled by Native Americans, the first European settlers arrived in the Oceanside area in 1769. Spanish missionaries founded the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia on the San Luis Rey River in 1798 . On July 3, 1888, Oceanside was officially founded by Andrew Jackson Myers. In the 20th century, Oceanside grew in importance as a vacation and recreation destination. In 1942 the naval base Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton was founded, which led to a considerable increase in the population in Oceanside due to the occupation of the naval base.

While an average of 42.1 mm of precipitation falls from November to April, the semi-arid climate here leads to an average rainfall of around 5 mm from May to October. Every year around 282.7 mm of precipitation falls. The average temperature in the year is 16.1 ° C.

Attractions

  • The Oceanside Pier , built in 1888, is the longest wooden pier on the US west coast at 592 meters.
  • The historic district of the Rosicrucian Fellowship in the Mount Ecclesia district is known for its architecture and gardens.
  • The California Surf Museum , which opened in 1986, shows, among other things, surfboards from different decades.
