Odontites discolor is a semi-parasitic plant species from the genus of the tooth rust ( Odontites ). The species is endemic to northeast Algeria .

description

Odontites discolor is an upright, richly branched, annual , herbaceous plant . It reaches heights of growth of 5 to 40 cm, according to a source, the plants should also be able to grow up to 80 cm. The stem can be more than 2 mm thick at the base and is densely hairy with downwardly attached, 0.2 to 0.5 mm long, downwardly directed trichomes . More than ten pairs of side branches arise from the nodes of the main axis. The leaves are linearly shaped, with entire margins and hairy on the edge and partly on the underside with dense bristles.

The inflorescences consist of more than ten flowers , which are accompanied by deciduous-scaly bracts . These are hairy similar to the leaves, the lower ones reach a length of 3.5 to 8 mm and a width of 1.5 to 2.5 mm. The order of blooming within an inflorescence is from the top flower to the lower flower.

The self-fertilizing (autogamous) flowers reach a length of 7.5 to 11 mm. The calyx becomes 4 to 7 mm long and is divided on half the length. The calyx lobes are triangular, the upper ones being slightly longer and significantly wider than the lower ones. The hair of the calyx consists of densely standing and mostly adjoining, up to 0.5 mm long stalk glands with short-conical heads. The hair on the ventral side (ventral) of the calyx is particularly pronounced. The crown is purple in color and only has short cephalic glands on the lower lip. The corolla tube takes up about half the length of the corolla, but is shorter than the calyx. The helmet is significantly longer than the lower lip. The lower lip is split into three lobes for a maximum of two thirds of the length. The central lobe has a trapezoidal or almost rectangular to square outline, is clearly delineated at the tip and usually a little longer than the side lobe. The side lobes are almost semicircular, the tip is rounded or indistinctly outlined.

The four stamens are partially hidden in the helmet. The lower two-thirds of the stamens are papillary . At right angles to the filaments are provided the dust bag , they are colored yellow or light brown and can reach a length of 1.5 to 1.9 mm. The counters open over the entire length and are narrowed at the lower end into a spiked tip. At the top they are covered with spiral trichomes, at the bottom there are up to 0.5 mm long bearded trichomes, the connective is covered with many tube hairs up to 0.7 mm long. The pollen grains reach a size of about 24 × 28.2 µm. The ovary contains two compartments ten or twelve ovules .

The fruits are inverted egg-shaped capsules that are clearly sanded and about 1.6 to 2 times as long as they are wide.

Occurrence

The kind is in the subspecies subsp. discolor an endemic of north-eastern Algeria . It occurs there in the eastern Tell Atlas and in the Edough Mountains and grows there at altitudes between 300 and 1100 m.

Systematics

The species Odontites discolor is part of the species group Odontites purpureus agg together with Odontites squarrosus and Odontites purpureus . posed. Within the species, a distinction is made between two subspecies, which differ only slightly in the hairiness of the bracts and calyxes, the flower size and the incisions of the lower lip of the flowers:

  • Odontites discolor ssp. discolor : It occurs in Algeria.
  • Odontites discolor ssp. ciliatus (Pomel) Bolliger : It occurs in Tunisia.
