Okka von der Damerau (* Hamburg ) is a German opera, concert and lied singer ( mezzo-soprano ).

Life

Development as an opera singer

After graduating from high school, Okka von der Damerau initially worked as a hearing aid acoustician and at the same time worked out the requirements for university studies. She then studied singing in Rostock and Freiburg and was then a member of the ensemble of the Hanover State Opera from 2006 to 2010 , where she performed minor roles such as the 3rd lady in the Magic Flute and Tisbe in La Cenerentola .

Okka von der Damerau has been a member of the Bavarian State Opera ensemble since the 2010/2011 season and has participated in numerous productions at this house and the Munich Opera Festival , initially in small and medium-sized roles, then also in larger, predominantly dramatic roles. Her debuts as Ulrica in a masked ball and especially as an actress in operas by Richard Wagner received particular attention from critics and audiences . Other opera houses also hired her for Wagner roles in the alto or deep mezzo-soprano, which she u. a. also performed at the Bayreuth Festival , the Lyric Opera of Chicago , the Vienna State Opera and the State Theater Stuttgart . In addition to her focus on Wagner, she maintains a diverse repertoire in works by composers of the Romantic and Modern periods.

Work as a concert singer

Her concert repertoire includes the alto solo parts from Arnold Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder (Waldtaube), the 2nd and 3rd symphonies by Gustav Mahler , as well as his Kindertotenlieder and Lied von der Erde , the alto rhapsody by Johannes Brahms , Richard Wagner's Wesendonck-Lieder , Ludwig van Beethoven's Missa solemnis and numerous oratorios from the classical and romantic periods. As a lieder singer with piano accompaniment, she mainly cultivates the romantic repertoire (Schubert, Brahms, Mahler).
