Oleg Velyky (originally Ukrainian Олег Володимирович Великий  /  Oleh Wolodymyrowytsch Velykyj ; born October 14, 1977 in Brovary , Soviet Union ; † January 23, 2010 in Kiev ) was a Ukrainian and German handball player who last played at HSV Hamburg .

Velyky was a member of the German national handball team . He made his international debut for the Federal Republic of Germany on January 8, 2005 in Winterthur against the Swiss national handball team . Before that, he played 59 international matches for the Ukrainian national handball team . Since April 1, 2004, Velyky had German citizenship .

Velyky was a player who could be used in many positions. Mostly he played on the back center or left back space . He was considered one of the best individualists in world handball. Velyky was 1.89 m long and weighed 96 kg.

Oleg Velyky was a sports teacher by profession . In September 2003 Velyky was diagnosed with malignant melanoma . The melanoma was surgically removed, and in January 2004 an 18-month therapy began, which led to remission .

At the end of 2006 he signed a three-year contract with the league competitor of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen , HSV Hamburg , which was originally to apply from the 2008/2009 season. However, both clubs agreed on an early move in January 2008.

At the 2008 European Championships in Norway, Velyky injured his knee in the first game against Belarus after four minutes of play and two hits scored. In the subsequent examination, a cruciate ligament rupture was diagnosed, which ruled out further participation in the EM. He was unable to participate in the 2006 European Championship because of a torn cruciate ligament.

On March 3, 2008, Velyky confirmed a relapse of his skin cancer . Nevertheless, he was still active as a player.

On the night of January 23, 2010, Velyky died of cancer in Kiev. Velyky was married and had a son.
