Oleksandr Jurijowytsch Wilkul ( Ukrainian Олександр Юрійович Вілкул ; born May 24, 1974 in Krywyj Rih , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian politician ( opposition bloc ). He is a member of the Verkhovna Rada and was Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine from December 2012 to February 27, 2014.

Life

Origin and family

Wilkul was born on May 24, 1974 in Kryvyi Rih in western Dnipropetrovsk Oblast . In 1996 he graduated from the Technical University of Krywyj Rih with a degree in mining engineering and then worked as an economic manager in his hometown until 2006 . He is married and has had a daughter named Maria since 2008. His father, Yuri Wilkul, is the mayor of Kryvyi Rih and the former rector of the Technical University of Kryvyi Rih.

Since 2006 he has been a member of the Party of Regions in the Ukrainian parliament and temporarily the deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. From March 2010 until his appointment as Deputy Prime Minister, he was Chairman of the Oblast Administration (Governor) of Dnepropetrovsk Oblast. On December 24, 2012, Viktor Yanukovych appointed him Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine in Azarov's second cabinet .

On May 16, 2013, by Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 279/2013, he was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine for Science and Technology .

Up to the events of the Euromaidan, Wilkul was considered a possible candidate for the post of Prime Minister of Ukraine to succeed Prime Minister Mykola Azarov . After Azarov's resignation, Wilkul was entrusted with the duties of the Prime Minister from January 28, 2014 to February 27, 2014.

In the parliamentary elections on October 26, 2014, Wilkul took second place on the list of the opposition bloc , a list of various smaller Eurosceptic and pro-Russian parties. In the election as mayor of Dnipro on November 17, 2015, Wilkul was defeated by Borys Filatov with 158,752 to 184,874 votes.

In the 2019 presidential election in Ukraine , the candidate Wilkul, who is considered more pro-Russia, took part in the first ballot on March 31, 2019.
