Olepa schleini is a nocturnal butterfly from the subfamily of the bear moth (Arctiinae), which was (re) discovered in 2005 and scientifically described.
The butterfly is native to the coastal areas of Israel . This makes it the only representative of the Olepa genus outside of the Indian subcontinent . Olepa Schleini was named after the Israeli entomologist and sculptor Yosef Schlein . The caterpillars of this moth feed exclusively on the wonder tree ( Ricinus communis ). This is remarkable in that the poison ricinin contained in the seeds of this plant is considered a highly effective insecticide .
Olepa Schleini is probably mentioned in the Bible as the "worm" sent by God to make Jonas ' shady castor plant wither overnight ( Jonah 4,6 ELB ).
