Onesimo Cepeda

Onésimo Cepeda Silva ( Mexico City , March 25, 1937 Ecatepec de Morelos , January 31, 2022 ) was a Mexican cleric and Roman Catholic Bishop of Ecatepec from 1995 to 2012 .

Life

Onésimo Cepeda studied law at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (1956-1960) and philosophy in the seminary of the missionaries of Guadalupe (1961-1964) and theology at the Swiss University of Friborg (1966-1970).

Originally a banker and stockbroker , he was the youngest general manager of private banking in Mexico. In 1964 he met the entrepreneur Carlos Slim Helú , with whom he built Inversora Bursátil, SA de CV, Casa de Bolsa , later Inbursa Financiero . Cepeda also worked with Roberto Hernández Ramírez , CEO of Grupo Financiero Banamex and later board member of Banamex Citigroup , Ingenieros Civiles Asociados (ICA) and Televisa among other companies.

Cepeda was ordained a priest on 28 October 1970 in Cuernavaca . He held various offices and positions for the Catholic Church. Since 1989 he was founder and rector of the Seminario Conciliar de San José in Cuernavaca and professor of theology.

In 1995, Pope John Paul II appointed him the first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Ecatepec . The episcopal consecration bestowed on him by the apostolic nuncio in Mexico, Archbishop Girolamo Prigione , on August 12, 1995 in front of the Cathedral of Ecatepec; Co -consecrators were Manuel Pérez-Gil y González , Archbishop of Tlalnepantla , and Luis Reynoso Cervantes , Bishop of Cuernavaca . From 1997 to 2000 he was President of the Commission for Social Communication of the Mexican Bishops' Conference (CEM) and Legal Advisor to the CEM.

Cepeda has been in the media spotlight from the start of his tenure due to good relations with the country's key business and political figures. In addition to Spanish, he spoke English, French, Italian and German.

On November 8, 2010, Onésimo Cepeda was charged with fraud and money laundering. He was accused of using a promissory note to obtain 42 paintings by local and foreign artists that belonged to Olga Azcarraga, who died in 2003 and belonged to the Azcarraga family of entrepreneurs . Bishop Cepeda claimed the paintings had been made available for charitable use through a promissory note with the purpose of using them for projects addressing poverty, disease, the support of priests and seminarians and young people in the country's rural areas. According to the press, the background to the charges was inheritance disputes between the Azcarraga family. The paintings by José Clemente Orozco , Diego Rivera , Rufino Tamayo , Frida Kahlo , Marc Chagall , Francisco de Goya and others have an alleged value of US$130 million. Cepeda handed over the official business until clarification to the Vicar General Blas Flores Montes.

Onésimo Cepeda was admitted to a hospital in Ecatepec de Morelos in early January 2022 due to health complications from the coronavirus , where he died at the age of 84.
