One Night Only is a song from the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls . The song was written by Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger. In the content of the musical, One Night Only is performed by two performers in different versions. As a soul ballad by the character Effie White and as a disco version by the girl group Deena Jones & the Dreams.

Both versions of One Night Only appeared as a song for the original 1982 album on Broadway musical Dreamgirls , sung by Jennifer Holliday as Effie, and Sheryl Lee Ralph , Loretta Devine and Deborah Burrell as Deena Jones & the Dreams. One Night Only was later covered by Elaine Paige and Sylvester James . Actor Hugh Jackman sang the song at the 2004 Tony Awards ceremony with the musical girl group Caroline, or Change , Hairspray and Little Shop of Horrors .

Dreamgirls wasfilmedby Bill Condon in 2006and produced by DreamWorks SKG and Paramount . For this film, the original versions of One Night Only were sungby Jennifer Hudson as Effie and Beyoncé Knowles , Anika Noni Rose and Sharon Leal as Deena Jones & the Dreams. The Underdogs production team directed the production of One Night Only and other songs from the soundtrack album. A remixed version of Deena's rendition of the song was produced by Eric Kupper & Richie Jones and released by Music World Entertainment and Columbia Records in August 2006 as a promotional single for the film soundtrack Dreamgirls: Music from the Motion Picture . That happened four months before the film was released. The remix version wassampledby the American rapper Lil Wayne for his version One Night Only .

One Night Only debuted on the UK charts at number 67 on September 6, 2009 , only through heavy download sales . Rozell Phillip's appearance on the British talent show The X Factor made the song popular again three years after its actual release. One Night Only is the second most successful track from the soundtrack album for the film Dreamgirls behind Beyoncé's lists . The song And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going also became popular again with performances by Nicole Lawrence, Danyl Johnson (on The X Factor), and Amber Riley on Glee .
