The Opaion of the Pantheon in Rome

An Opaion ( Greek  ὀπαῖον for "smoke hole", plural Opaia ), German Opäum , is a round opening at the highest point of a dome . Other names are dome eye or simply eye . Since the Renaissance in particular , the Opaion has usually been roofed over by a lantern , which allows less and more diffuse light to enter the interior , but protects it from the weather .
