from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Operation Sommerregen was a covert operation by the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) during the Cold War in the time of the Soviet War in Afghanistan from the mid-1980s in Afghanistan .

The BND smuggled special forces from Pakistan into the country in order to steal Soviet weapons technology, such as armor for attack helicopters such as the Mi-24 , vehicles, land mines , modern ammunition, including uranium ammunition , warheads for rockets, night vision devices and navigation technology and cooperated with the rebellious mujahideen . The members of the BND entered the country disguised as humanitarian aid workers for refugees across the border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan . There the Bundeswehr provided those in need with medicines, food, blankets and clothing. The captured material was transported to Germany on a weekly basis by a Bundeswehr transport machine from Peschawar . The material was then tested in Germany.

The lead was carried out by the BND Department 16 A, responsible for the Near and Middle East regions. According to former employees, the budget for the operation was 250,000 German marks (DM) annually.

The operation is considered one of the great successes of the BND. This operation only became known in 2013 after research by Welt am Sonntag and ZDF .
