Oprah Winfrey Network , or OWN for short, is an American television station that is broadcast via cable. The station, which is named after talk show host Oprah Winfrey , has aired since January 1, 2011 and emerged from the former Discovery Health Channel . The main owner of the station, which can be received by a little more than 70% of US television households, is Discovery Inc. , who founded the station in the form of a majority shareholder, together with Winfrey, and now hold the majority of the shares after Winfrey im December 2017 sold part of its shares to the company, but remains CEO of the station.
