history
Travel reports about the settlements in today's Orašje municipality go back to the 13th century. The village of Tolisa should be mentioned here. Tolisa Church is now the largest Catholic church in Bosnia-Herzegovina .
The town of Orašje was created in the 19th century when the Ottoman Empire gradually lost ground in the Balkans. The Muslims who previously settled in Serbia were expelled from there. Some came to the Posavina, where they were allowed to set up their settlements. This is how Gornja Azizija and Donja Azizija (today's cities of Šamac and Orašje) came into being.
Orašje and the surrounding villages were not spared from the Bosnian war either. When the Posavina fell, Orašje was the only city that could hold out. From July 1992 until the end of the war, the municipality of Orašje together with the places Domaljevac, Grebnice and Bazik (today the municipality of Domaljevac-Šamac ) lay on a long front strip. The east of the community was particularly hard hit. The remnants of the war can still be seen today.
In May 2014, the municipality, like large parts of Bosnia, was affected by the flood. The worst hit was in the east of the community. The Sava swelled to a record high. In the village of Kopanice , the weir that was built up in the 1960s gave way and was destroyed by the water masses that now poured into the flat strip of land. Kopanice, Vidovice , Jenjić and Lepnica were under water for almost three weeks.
population
In 1991 the municipality ( općina ) Orašje had 28,211 inhabitants. Of these, 75.27% said they were Croats , 14.96% Serbs , 6.77% Bosniaks and 2.15% Yugoslavs .
The town of Orašje itself had 3,901 inhabitants. Of these, 47% were Bosniaks, 23% Serbs, 15% Croats and 12% Yugoslavs.
At the 2013 census, only a good 21,500 people lived in the community.
Sports
The local football club is called HNK Orašje (Hrvatski Nogometni klub Orašje) and was 1998 champion of the Croatian league in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the 2005/06 season HNK Orašje was Bosnian Cup winner and thus played in the UEFA Cup .
