The Comarca Osona is in the province of Barcelona in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia ( Spain ). However, three municipalities belong to the province of Girona (Espinelvas, Vidrá and Viladrau). The comarca has an area of 1247.0 km² and 160,821 inhabitants (2019).

location

The comarca is located in the eastern part of Catalonia, west of the provincial capital Girona . It borders in the north on the Comarca Ripollès , in the east on Garrotxa and Selva , in the south on Vallès Oriental , in the west on Bages and Berguedà . Together with the comarcas Anoia , Bages, Berguedà and Solsonès , the comarca Osona forms the territory of Comarques Central .

Osona is located in the far east of the central Catalan Depression. In the center of the comarca is the Plana de Vic plain , surrounded by mountain ranges with peaks from 1000 m to 1500 m. In the north these are the Serras (German mountain ranges) de Bufadors, de Milany and de Santa Magdalena , in the east the mountain ranges Collsacabra and les Guilleries and in the southeast it is the Montseny massif with the Parc Natural del Montseny . The middle course of the river Ter makes its way in numerous loops from north to south to the Vic plain, where it changes direction and flows east. The river feeds two reservoirs here, the Pantà de Sau and the Pantà de Susqueda . The river Gavarresa rises in the north-west near the Gemeine Alpens at an altitude of 900 m and crosses the western comarca from north to south.

In the capital Vic there is a university, the Universitat de Vic . The two largest cities are Vic with an area of 30.92 km² and 40,000 inhabitants and Manlleu with more than 20,000 inhabitants and about 17.3 km².

The writers and poets such as Verdaguer, Emilio Weaver, Miquel Martí i Pol and Maria Engel Anglada come from Osona .

Musicians and groups such as Pep Sala, Rafael Subirachs, Esquirols, Sau and Quimi Portet are also noteworthy. Other important figures from Osona are Jaume Balmes, Ildefons Cerdà, Antoni Pladevall and Pilarín Bayés.

traffic

Osona is relatively well developed in terms of transport. The highways C-17 and C-25 and the S-Bahn line R3 (Barcelona - Ripoll) run through the comarca.

The national road C-17 has been expanded to four lanes as far as Ripoll since 2008. The C-25 (Eix Transversal) runs from Cervera to Girona (connection to the motorway).

A two-lane expansion of the S-Bahn line to Vic, as well as a new line from Lleida to Girona (Eix Transversal Ferroviari) are planned.

economy

In the comarca, livestock, especially pig breeding, is of great importance. The feed required for this is grown in agriculture. Companies in the textile, food, leather and metal industries have settled in Osona.
