She grew up on her parents' secluded estate in Lochkov and received a careful upbringing. After her father died early, she went on long journeys with her mother and sister Marie in her youth , including to Munich , Paris , Brussels , Saint Petersburg and Rome , where she was introduced to circles of artists and scholars. She got to know Ivan Sergejewitsch Turgenew , George Sand and Alfred Meissner . She borrowed her pseudonym Ossip Schubin from one of Turgenev's novels, Helena . Her first novel Misunderstood and Missed appeared in Prague's Bohemia . Further publications followed in the magazines Schorers Familienblatt , Deutsche Rundschau and Über Land und Meer .
