action
The Low German-speaking Uwe Hinrichs is of the opinion that he will be the last East Frisian. The house of the loner Hinrichs is seized and a group of foreigners ("Utlanders" as Hinrichs calls them) are quartered there for a German integration seminar. However, because Uwe intervenes, the group leader can no longer do this, and Uwe Hinrichs is ultimately ordered to take over the seminar so that the applicants can pass the integration test. But he teaches them Low German in a barn and befriends one of the refugees after he identifies himself as a ship engineer and can improve Uwe's passionate hobby of tinkering with ships in bottles.
But the old seminar leader intervenes and takes over the course, but cannot prevent all applicants from failing the German integration test . Only after Hinrichs intervenes can the applicants pass and get permission to work in Germany. You find Hinrichs at the grave of his wife Elfriede and buy the house back for him.
In the credits it is shown which professions they have all acquired and how their private life continues.
reception
- "All in all," East Frisian for Beginners "is an entertaining film that has more depth than it might seem at first glance."
- A tragic comedy with a focus on integration, which impresses above all with its constructive and conciliatory approach. "
- “Unfortunately, 'East Frisian for Beginners' is more gaudy than subtle. [...] Only because of Hallervorden is such a film even showing in the cinema. 'East Frisian for Beginners' was conceived as a television film, and you can see it in it. Dialogues like from a theses talk show. Fecal humor. Gags with announcement. "
In the first week, the film saw 13,000 viewers.
Quotes
“My character Uwe is going through an enormous development. This is a totally grouchy, closed, sad man who rebels against everything foreign and immediately closes the bulkheads. He then notices, as he gets to know the strangers better, that it is worth throwing overboard gained, established knowledge, opening up again, throwing prejudices aside. Suddenly he gets a zest for life again because he notices that people of different skin color and religion are deep down just like himself - namely people. ”- Dieter Hallervorden
