The Ostwestfalenhalle is a building originally planned as a wholesale market hall and now used as a multi-purpose hall in Verl in East Westphalia in the Gütersloh district . It is located at Paderborner Straße 408 in the Kaunitz district , is 52 meters long and 35 meters wide. The hall was inaugurated on April 1, 1966 and is popularly known as the egg hall or egg barn because of its original purpose as a trading center for poultry and poultry products .

history

The history of the Ostwestfalenhalle goes back to the late 1950s, when what was then the Wiedenbrück district was a stronghold of poultry farming and egg production. In 1960, in Kaunitz, on the farm of an inn, a poultry wholesale market was opened, where traders from all over North Rhine-Westphalia offered chickens, geese, ducks and eggs .

The market quickly became too big for the available space, so that the community representatives of Österwiehe planned the construction of a hall as an alternative location and also made a plot of land available for it. The poultry traders agreed to contribute to the construction costs of 900,000 Deutschmarks with 150,000 Deutschmarks. The hall was initially operated by a special-purpose association made up of representatives from the municipality and dealers, and later the municipality of Verl. Since 2006, the Ostwestfalenhalle has been owned by the city.

Events

Today the Ostwestfalenhalle is used as a multi-purpose hall in which z. B. concerts, consumer fairs, rifle festivals, flea and antique markets take place. In 2013, 59 events were held there.

The largest event is still the hobby market that emerged from the original poultry wholesale market and takes place monthly in and around the hall, which , with more than 350 dealers, is the largest animal and flea market in Germany . The trucker and classic car meetings also attract visitors from all over Germany every year. Furthermore, the Club Winner Show, the highest show of the German Teckel Club, has already taken place there several times.
