Oswald Hafenrichter
Oswald Eduard Hafenrichter (born April 10, 1899 in Oplotnitz , Austria-Hungary , † May 1973 in London ) was an Austro-British film editor .
Life
Oswald Eduard Hafenrichter, who originally came from southern Styria , studied medicine in Graz and Vienna in the early 1920s before moving to Berlin in 1925, where he trained as a cutter at the UFA . After the National Socialists came to power , he was arrested several times for his work in the KPD , which is why he moved to Vienna in 1936 to continue working for the Italian film director Carmine Gallone . After Italy joined the Third Reich in the war, he fled via France to England , where he edited propaganda films under Winston Churchill during the last years of the war . After the war he stayed in London and continued to work as an editor, including for The Third Man , which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Editing in 1951 . The Brazilian director Alberto Cavalcanti persuaded him to follow him to Brazil in 1950 to work for him. After seven years in which he mainly edited dramas, he returned to London, where he continued to work in the field of film editing until his death in the London Borough of Hounslow .
