Ota Weinberger (born April 20, 1919 in Brno , † January 30, 2009 in Graz ) was a Czech legal philosopher and logician . From 1972 to 1989 Weinberger headed the Graz Institute for Legal Philosophy.

Life

Weinberger, who enjoyed a reputation in the professional world as a logician and legal theorist, became known beyond the academic framework as a political warning to a broad public. For a long time he suffered badly from the political conditions in his homeland. As a Jew, he was first persecuted by the National Socialists . He was initially unable to complete his law studies at Masaryk University in his hometown and spent four years in concentration camps . After the war , he finished his studies and entered the court service. As a democrat, he refused to join the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and was subsequently suppressed by those in power. Despite the most adverse circumstances, he managed to embark on a scientific career. In the meantime he had to work as a locksmith. During the Prague Spring in 1968 Weinberger stayed in Vienna at the World Congress of Philosophy and never returned to his homeland. Only after the collapse of communism was he rehabilitated in the Czech Republic. The University of Salzburg awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1993, and the Masaryk University in Brno in 2004. Weinberger died on January 30, 2009 after a long and serious illness.
