The house Otto-Franke-Straße 34 is a listed building in the district of Stadt Gernrode belonging to the city of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located east of Gernröder's old town on the north side of Otto-Franke-Straße and is listed as a residential building in the local register of monuments.

Architecture and history

The two-story building has a massive ground floor, which probably dates from the middle of the 19th century. The upper floor was built in half-timbered construction around 1900 . The half-timbered facade shows elements of Art Nouveau with curved struts .

Both the room layout and certain furnishings such as doors and the stairs have been preserved in their original form.

In 1863 the later famous sinologist Otto Franke was born in the building . A plaque referring to him on the building was unveiled on October 8, 2010. In 1870 Louis Schumann founded the third Gernrodes match factory on the property . The production was done by machine. There were 20 to 25 workers, a foreman, a coachman and a messenger employed. The brand name of the matches produced was Margrave woods until 1905 . The label showed two bears holding Anhalt's coat of arms . They were phosphor woods and Swedish safety woods . Production was then taken over by Hubert Schumann, Louis Schumann's son in 1905, and continued under the brand name Gero-Hölzer . The label showed a picture of Margrave Gero . The production was still modern. Peeling, planing, cutting and inserting machines were used. The wood required was imported from Russia , using aspen wood . In 1909 a steam boiler system is purchased. In addition, a horse stable and a fire-proof building for storing the untaxed matches, the so-called wheelhouse, was built. With the beginning of the First World War , the production of aspen wood had to be switched to more expensive local poplar wood . In 1920 a box filling machine and a radio machine were purchased. Three filling machines were also added to the factory equipment. In addition, the toilets have been modernized.

Changes in the match market ultimately lead to the fact that on February 4, 1926 the production of matches was stopped. However, wooden chopstick games were still being made. The rights to this were taken over in 1927 by the Gernröder company Laddey. A horticultural company was set up on the property as early as 1931. The production of chopsticks continued, however, and only ended with the death of Hubert Schumann in 1939. Werner Schumann, Hubert Schumann's son, added a glass flower pavilion to the house.

From 1939 to 1945 a prisoner of war camp was set up on the confiscated factory site . 66 Polish soldiers were held prisoner. The guards consisted of six German soldiers.

After the end of the Second World War , the factory rooms were used by different companies. From 1951 the Kurt Bartsch rubber processing company existed here. A nursery was run as a family business on the property until 2014 .

Until December 31, 2011 the name of Otto-Franke-Straße was Bahnhofstraße, so the address of the property was Bahnhofstraße 34.
