Life

He studied chemistry and received his doctorate in 1924 at the University of Frankfurt am Main under Julius von Braun . In 1937 he discovered polyaddition for the synthesis of polyurethane and later a route to the direct synthesis of acrylonitrile for the production of polyacrylonitrile fibers .

From 1933 he held various management positions in institutions of the IG paint industry. Otto Bayer was not related to Friedrich Bayer , the founder of Bayer AG.

For his work in the field of technical polymer synthesis and for the development of new technical materials ( polyurethanes ), he received the Werner von Siemens Ring together with Walter Reppe and Karl Ziegler in 1960 .
