Life

Dobencker attended the community school in Kahla until 1871, after which the family moved to Eisenberg. Here he attended the municipal Progymnasium, which became a full grammar school in 1875. In contrast to Kahla, Dobencker was able to take the Abitur there, which he succeeded in 1880. He then studied history, German, classical philology and French at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . His most important academic teacher was Dietrich Schäfer . On January 27, 1883, he passed his doctorate with a thesis on the battle of Mühldorf am Inn (1322). On December 8, 1883 Dobecker also passed the state examination for the higher teaching post.

After his probationary year in 1884/85 he worked as a senior teacher at the Grand Ducal Carolo-Alexandrinum grammar school in Jena from 1886 . In 1901 he was awarded the title of Professor by Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst for his work there . On April 1, 1909, Dobecker rose to the position of director of the grammar school and was later awarded the title of "Hofrat". In 1924 he was retired as a grammar school director.

Dobencker was a member of the Association for Thuringian History and Archeology and was there as secretary, from 1902 as deputy chairman, after the death of Eduard Rosenthal in 1926 chairman. He was in charge of editing the association's publications. From 1891 to 1931 Dobebecker was the editor of the club magazine . In 1931 he resigned from all offices and became an honorary member of the association.

In 1896 Dobencker became secretary of the newly founded Thuringian Historical Commission .

Research activity

After the completion of the dissertation Dietrich Schafer won his students for work on Regestenwerk Regesta diplomatica necnon epistolaria historiae Thuringiae. The aim of Dobencker's main work was to collect all information on Thuringian history . In order to work on the regesta, Dobecker's number of hours at the high school was reduced. The individual volumes were published by the Association for Thuringian History and Archeology and printed by Gustav Fischer in Jena. The volumes were published between 1896 and 1939. Volume I: approx. 500-1152; Volume II: 1152-1227; Volume III: 1228-1266; Volume IV: 1267-1288. The Regestenwerk, also known as "der Dorbencker", made numerous further studies possible and is still used today.

The other research work of Dobencker resulted mainly from the work on the regesta and was mainly concerned with the history of Thuringia.
