Otto Friemel

Otto Friemel (born December 12, 1896 in Gernrode ; † March 26, 1975 there ) was a German politician ( KPD / SED ). He was a member of the Landtag of the Free State of Anhalt and after 1945 mayor of his hometown.

Life

Friemel, the son of a working-class family, worked, among other things, as a worker at the Eisenhüttenwerk AG Thale . In 1916 he was drafted as a soldier for military service in the First World War. From 1919 to 1922 he was a worker in a match factory, from 1922 to 1933 he was employed again at the Thale ironworks.

In 1922 he joined the KPD. On April 24, 1932, Friemel was elected to the state parliament of Anhalt for the KPD.

After the National Socialists “seized power ” in 1933, Friemel spent a few weeks in “ protective custody ”. From 1936 he was a forest worker at the Gernrode Forestry Office. After the failed assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944 , he was arrested again as part of the “ Aktion Gewitter ”.

After the war ended in 1945, Friemel rejoined the KPD and became a member of the SED in 1946. From 1945 to 1954 he was the mayor of his hometown, at times he was also head of the Gernrode employment office . Most recently he acted as a manager in the district construction company.
