Otto I. von Hachberg-Sausenberg (* 1302 ; † 1384 ) was Margrave of Hachberg-Sausenberg.

Life

Otto was the son of Margrave Rudolf I von Hachberg-Sausenberg and the heiress of Otto von Rötteln , Agnes. After his brother Heinrich died in 1318, Otto and his second brother Rudolf II took over the reign of Rötteln and Sausenberg . The residence was moved from Sausenburg to Rötteln Castle . After the death of his brother Rudolf (1352) he initially took over the guardianship of his nephew, Rudolf III. which he then transferred to the Count of Thierstein in 1358 . When Rudolf III. In 1364 he assumed his inheritance, he continued to rule with his uncle until his death in 1384. Otto was married to Katharina von Grandson and Elisabeth von Strassberg († 1352) for the first time and had no descendants.

In autumn 1332 troops of the city of Basel besieged his castle Rötteln, because he (or his brother) had stabbed the mayor of Basel. The conflict was settled after mediation by the nobility of town and country.

The Margraves Hachberg-Sausenberg, Rudolf III. and Otto, donated the altar to the Holy Cross to the church in Sitzenkirch in 1366 . Margrave Otto was buried in the church in Sitzenkirch in 1384 .

Depiction in the historical novel

Alongside his brother Rudolf, Otto is the main character in Käthe Papke's 1928 historical novel , "The Iron Margrave of Sausenberg-Rötteln." In this novel, Papke attributes the murder of Basel mayor Otto, who is portrayed as a choleric . It also interweaves the legend of the "Witch of Binzen" with the two historical figures Rudolf and Otto.
