Otto Sauter (born June 23, 1961 in Tengen , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German trumpeter specializing in baroque music and piccolo trumpet .

Life

At the age of four he received his first trumpet lessons. At the age of 16 he began studying with Claude Rippas at the conservatory in Winterthur / Zurich. There he obtained a teaching and orchestral diploma in 1984 and a soloist diploma a year later. After graduating, he deepened his studies with Bo Nilsson in Malmö , Sweden and Pierre Thibaud in Paris.

From 1988 to 1998 he was the solo trumpeter in the Philharmonic State Orchestra in Bremen. In 1991 he founded the annual International Trumpet Days Bremen (concerts with for example Maurice André , Montserrat Caballé , Ray Charles ) and in 1994 the International Trumpet Academy Bremen. In 1988 he was appointed to the University of the Arts in Bremen . In 1995 the Toho Gakuen School for Music in Tokyo and the Universidad Metropolitana de Santiago de Chile gave him visiting professorships.

In December 1995 Otto Sauter played with the Philharmonia Orchestra London at St. James Palace in the presence of Prince Charles. In 1998 he made a guest appearance in the Vatican on the occasion of the founding of the “German Society for the Restoration of Vatican Art Treasures”. There he also played in August 2000 for Pope John Paul II accompanied by the Philharmonia Hungarica during the “Festa Musica Pro Mundo VNO”. In 2001 he gave a concert with the China National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Muhai Tang in the "Forbidden City" in Beijing.

At EMI Classics he began to record concerts of his 600 or so music collection of lost compositions by baroque and early classical masters such as A. Scarlatti , G. Reutter or J. M. Molter as world premier recordings. To expand the repertoire of contemporary original literature for piccolo trumpet, he has commissioned works from, for example, Julien-François Zbinden , Harald Genzmer and Jan Koetsier . In 2004 he presented three world premieres of works by the Czech composer Juraj Filas , two of them at the Beethoven Festival in Bonn: The “Concerto for Piccolo Trumpet and Symphony Orchestra”, performed with the Bonn Beethoven Orchestra and “Appassionate” for piccolo trumpet and Organ.

In 2008 he gave the world premiere of the new trumpet concerto for piccolo trumpet and symphony orchestra by Mikis Theodorakis , which the Greek composer wrote for Otto Sauter, in a ring premiere at the Philharmonie in Cologne and Berlin (directed by Gert Hof / arrangement Robert Gulya). In 2004 he opened the "Wartburg Festival" as artistic director. In 2005 Otto Sauter initiated the international choir and music festival “Musica Sacra a Roma” in Rome and in the Vatican under the patronage of Cardinal Paul Poupard.

In 2007 he initiated the Little Amadeus Live children's concert series as artistic director with around 70 concerts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in cooperation with the cartoon series from KI.KA, ARD and ZDF, which was awarded the “Echo Klassik für Kinder”.

In 1991 Otto Sauter founded the “Ten of the Best” ensemble with ten trumpeters, bass, drums and piano. In August 2001 they played at the opening of the AufSchalke arena . In 2006 the ensemble gave 16 concerts during the “Playtime Live City Concert Tour”, the Germany-wide music festival as part of the 2006 World Cup , supported by the 2006 World Cup Organizing Committee.

In 2003 he initiated a series of concerts in German churches and cathedrals, as well as the opening gala of the Schafhof Festival for UNICEF by Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff in favor of the 50th anniversary of UNICEF Germany . In Singen am Hohentwiel he gave benefit concerts a. a. with Montserrat Caballé or Bobby McFerrin for the Otto Sauter Relief Fund. On the occasion of the Mozart year 2006 he initiated the “Little Amadeus Day of Action” at German primary schools together with the producer Peter Will of the TV series of the same name.
