Otto Zsigmondy
Otto Zsigmondy (born January 6, 1860 in Vienna ; † June 30, 1917 there ) was an Austrian dentist and mountaineer .
Otto was one of four sons of the dentist Adolph Zsigmondy , but was the only one who had also become a dentist. He is considered to be one of the successors of the pioneer of scientific dentistry, Moriz Heider .
As an enthusiastic alpinist, he and his brother Emil Zsigmondy and Ludwig Purtscheller achieved numerous first ascents and ascents, such as the Great Möseler North Face, the "Firndreieck" in the Zillertal Alps or in 1885 the entire crossing of the Meije (Dauphiné Alps).
When his brother Emil fell while attempting the first ascent of the Meije south face and was killed, he was so moved that he did not complete his habilitation thesis and broke off his scientific career.
In 1894 Otto Zsigmondy became president of the Austrian Alpine Club .
Zsigmondy is buried at the Evangelical Cemetery in Simmering .
