Otto of Verdun
Otto von Verdun († spring 944 ) was a Count of Verdun and from 940 a Duke of Lotharingia . He was the son of Count Richwin von Verdun , murdered in 923 , whom he was probably able to follow in Verdun, although he was never named with the title of Count.
Otto was entrusted in 940 by King Otto I the Great with the power as prefect ( praeficiensque regioni Lothariorum ) in Lotharingia after the king's brother Heinrich had been deposed there. The king had recognized the underage son of the former Duke Giselbert , who was also called Heinrich, as the rightful Duke of Lotharingia . Otto was only to rule as guardian for him.
Otto died in the spring of 944. Apparently his protégé had died before him, because after Otto's death the king immediately appointed Konrad the Red as Duke in Lotharingia, without considering or mentioning the son of Giselbert. In 949 a Count Rudolf was named in Verdun .
