Oullins is a French city with 26,273 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Métropole de Lyon in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The inhabitants call themselves Oullinois (es) .

geography

Oullins is six kilometers southwest of Lyon . The Yzeron flows through the municipality and the Rhône flows between Oullins and Lyon.

history

Oullins was mentioned for the first time in 855 in a document from Lothar I as Aulanius . The city was on the old Roman road that connected Lyon with Narbonne .

Oullins was devastated in the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598). Until the Industrial Revolution , the main industries in Oullins were agriculture and trade. In 1847 Alphonse Clément-Désormes set up a company to manufacture locomotives. The plant was closed after the Second World War .

Oullins was part of the canton of Oullins until 2015 .

Attractions

Part of the Roman aqueduct of Gier (one of the four aqueducts of Lugdunum / Lyon) crosses the Yzeron near Oullins. The "Aqueduct of Beaunant" is named after a hamlet that lies between Oullins and Chaponost .

Town twinning

Since 1962 there has been a twinning with Nürtingen in Germany and since 1996 with Pescia in Italy . The partnership with Nürtingen was one of the first city partnerships in France.

Three types of fruit are named after the place:

  • Kalvill from Oullins, an apple variety
  • Oullins Reineclaude , a Reneklode that is very common in Germany
  • Angoumois d'Oullins, a variety of apricots
