Ousseina Alidou
Ousseina Dioula Alidou (born March 29, 1963 in Niamey ) is a Nigerian linguist .
Life
Ousseina Alidou attended school at the École Canada of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Perpetual Aid in Niamey. In 1988 she graduated from Niamey University with a master's degree in linguistics . She received a USAID scholarship and earned another Masters Degree in Linguistics from Indiana University Bloomington in 1991 . There she taught Hausa from 1990 to 1992 . Alidou returned to Niamey University in 1993 as a visiting lecturer in phonology . In 1994 she was visiting professor for Hausa at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and from 1995 she was a professor for Hausa and head of the African languages program at Ohio State University . She received her PhD in 1997 from Indiana University Bloomington with a phonological study on language games in six Nigerian languages .
Alidou became a faculty member in the Department of African American and African Studies at Rutgers University . In addition, she worked as a visiting professor at the University of Lüneburg in 2002 and as a visiting professor at the University of Hamburg in 2003 . From 2013 to 2016 she was a board member of the African Studies Association . Alidou's research focuses on the language practices of women in African Islamic societies. In relation to these societies, she deals with gender equality , women's literature, identity discourses and the politics of cultural production.
Ousseina Alidou's twin sister is the educator and diplomat Hassana Alidou .
