Owsley Stanley

Augustus Owsley "Bear" Stanley III (born January 19, 1935 in Kentucky , † March 12, 2011 in Queensland , Australia ) was an American sound engineer of the Grateful Dead and drug producer.

Career

Owsley Stanley served 18 months in the United States Air Force during the 1950s . He was the first to produce high-purity LSD on a large scale in the 1960s . In 1966 he met the band Grateful Dead, which he then supported financially and for whom he worked as a sound engineer. In 1967 the police carried out repeated raids and confiscated drugs that eventually led to Stanley being sentenced to three years in prison.

After his imprisonment, he worked occasionally as a sound engineer for the Grateful Dead. He produced the album History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 (Bear's Choice) with them in 1973 . A motif that is much associated with the Grateful Dead on that album and on various promotional items are the “Marching Bears”, which are based on Stanley's idea.

In the 1980s he emigrated to Australia and settled in the state of Queensland.

On March 12, 2011, Stanley died in a traffic accident when his car went off the road.

Owsley Stanley was married and had four children. The American politician and governor of Kentucky Augustus Owsley Stanley was his grandfather.

Stanley's career inspired Steely Dan to write Kid Charlemagne on their album The Royal Scam .
