Pál Joensen (born December 10, 1990 in Vágur ) is a Faroese swimmer who is currently the best in his country.

Career

Joensen first appeared on the international stage at the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne , when he competed in the 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 meter freestyle , but failed in each of the heats. The following year he managed to swim to three titles at the Junior European Championships in Belgrade . With a time of 7: 56.90 he set a junior European record over 800 meters. At the same time, it was the all-age record for the Nordic countries . In a congratulatory letter, the Faroese Prime Minister Jóannes Eidesgaard spoke of the “greatest Faroese sporting achievement of all time”.

At the 2010 European Swimming Championships in the Hungarian capital, Budapest , he finished fifth in the 800 meter freestyle final. Two days earlier he had surprisingly won the silver medal in the 1500 meters freestyle. Joensen is the first athlete in the Faroe Islands to win a medal at international championships. As a result, plans were accelerated to build the Faroe Islands' first 50-meter basin in his native Vágur in his honor . In the following year he again reached fifth place over 800 meters at the 2011 World Swimming Championships in Shanghai . He had previously achieved the second fastest time of all heats with 7: 45.55 and set a new Nordic record. Over 1500 meters he was on the bronze course for a long time, but had to admit defeat to the Hungarian Gergő Kis on the last track .

Joensen also regularly shows exceptional performances at the Island Games , where he has collected 21 gold medals since 2007. It is noteworthy that Joensen still trains in the small indoor swimming pool in his home town, which only has 25-meter lanes.

In 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013 Joensen received the “Faroese Sportsman of the Year” award from the public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya on New Year's Eve .

Pál Joensen was part of the Danish Olympic team at the 2012 Summer Games and the 2016 Summer Games .

He is studying at Copenhagen Business School .
