PL-5

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The PL-5 is a Chinese short-range air-to-air missile .

development

The development of the PL-5 began in April 1966, the first tests took place from 1967. Both an infrared and a semi-actively steered version were planned. The program made slow progress, partly due to technical difficulties and partly due to the consequences of the Cultural Revolution . The first attempt to start under operational conditions took place in 1983. Even so, development stopped as the military budget was cut in favor of economic development. However, the infrared guided version P-5B survived the cuts and was certified in 1986. The missile was introduced in the late 1990s to replace the obsolete PL-2 . The steering system and the seeker head were only slightly modernized in the initial version. The structure of the rocket is similar to that of the AIM-9G Sidewinder .

variants

  • PL-5C: More stable cell, which enables maneuvers with higher g -forces .
  • PL-5E: "All-aspect" skills (can attack targets from all directions).
