Pagan the cupbearer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pagan , called the cupbearer , ( French : Payen le Bouteiller ; * before 1105; † around 1148) was a French crusader and from 1134 lord of Oultrejordain .

Life

Pagan first appeared in 1120 as the cupbearer of King Baldwin I of Jerusalem . After Baldwin's death he was also the cupbearer of the new King Fulk of Jerusalem . In 1134 Fulko deposed the rebellious novel by Le Puy as Lord of Oultrejordain and gave this fief to Pagan. Nevertheless Pagan remained Fulkos cupbearer until 1136.

As Lord of Oultrejordain, Pagan resided in Montreal Castle . However, during his tenure, the construction of the more powerful Kerak Castle began around 1142 , which Montreal later replaced as the center of rule. He also reinforced the garrisons of his smaller castles in Eilat and Vaux Moise . With these four castles, the Lord of Oultrejordain gained control of the lands of Idumea and Moab with their rich grain fields and the salt pits on the Dead Sea and also controlled the only usable roads from Egypt and western Arabia to Syria. However, the crusaders made no serious attempts to colonize Oultrejordain and left the Bedouin tribes relatively unmolested in the barren areas.

Pagan is mentioned as a participant in the Council of Acre in June 1148.

After his death, his nephew Moritz von Montreal (Maurice) took over the rule of Oultrejordain.
