history

Paignton, for which various names are recorded in history ( Paington , Paynton , Payington and Paignton ), is recorded in the Domesday Book as Peinton . Paignton has been the official name since 1837. Presumably the area was first settled around 700. It is believed that the name comes from the farm of Paega's people .

In 1856 Paignton was connected to the railroad . Built in the 1874 American sewing machines -producer Isaac Singer the oldway mansion ; In 1923 the Paignton Zoo was opened, which is still one of the main attractions today and is the third largest zoo in England.

Paignton was a fishing village until the 19th century. A new port was built in the 19th century. At the same time, tourism grew considerably during this period. As a result, a 236 m pier was built in Paignton to provide amusement for tourists. Even today tourism is Paignton's main source of income.
