The Palace of the Republic ( Kazakh Республика Сарайы , Russian Дворец Республики ), originally Lenin Palace , is a building in the eastern city center of the Kazakh city of Almaty . It is not far from the Hotel Kazakhstan and is now used for cultural events.

history

The Moscow architect Prostakov, who had already helped to design the Abai Opera House , turned to Dinmuchamed Kunayev in the 1960s and presented him with his idea for a venue for party congresses and concert events. At that time, the State Kremlin Palace in Moscow had already been built, and the construction of similar buildings in Leningrad and Kiev was already underway or planned. After Kunayev had rejected this design, he first commissioned Moscow architects to work out a design together with local architects. After this failed, however, he entrusted the Kasgorstroi Project Institute in Alma-Ata with it.

The building's architects had to design and build a building suitable for large events such as the Communist Party Congress and concerts by Soviet musicians within three years . Since there were restrictions on the construction of concert halls at that time, the palace was officially referred to as the Caspotrebsojus Cultural Club during the construction period.

The Palace of the Republic was inaugurated in 1970 on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Vladimir Lenin , the founder of the Soviet Union . It was opened under the name Palace of Culture. The architects of the building Vladimir Kim , Yuri Ratuschni , Nikolai Ripinsky and Lev Uchobotov were awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1971 for their work. On December 6, 1991 it was renamed the Palace of the Republic.

Between 2010 and 2011, the building was renovated and rebuilt for the first time in 40 years. In the interior of the building, among other things, walls were reinforced so that the structure is protected against seismic activity in the region. In addition, the architectural appearance has been greatly changed in that the previously formative facade with its concrete parts is now hidden behind a glass facade. The remodeling was actually carried out as part of a program to preserve historical and cultural monuments of national importance, but it resulted in a completely different architectural appearance of the building.
