action

Two American surfers say goodbye to each other on a beach in Australia as one of them has to fly back to California . The two do not notice the immense number of dead animals on the beach. During the return flight, the surfer begins to spit blood and dies before landing.

Meanwhile, the second surfer is found dead in Australia. Dr. Kayla Martin is an employee of the CDC who was entrusted with the case. She and the local officials recover the dead body from the plane and quarantine the other passengers . Despite all precautionary measures, a passenger manages to slip away in order not to miss a business meeting. Unknowingly, this is how this passenger brings the virus to the population of Los Angeles . The so-called "Riptide Virus", a mutation of the bird flu virus , is now appearing in more and more cities around the world.

The situation is complicated by the fact that one of the passengers, a convicted drug king who was guarded by the FBI during the flight , escapes with the help of sympathizers. To protect himself and his men, he steals the drugs he needs to blackmail the officials. As the epidemic spreads and deaths rise across California, despite their political differences, the governor and mayor must pull together to prevent a disaster.

In the end, Dr. Martin and her laboratory team to develop a healing method. The fact that the drug kingpin had tuberculosis and is therefore immune to the Riptide virus creates a new treatment option. The antibodies in tuberculosis patients prevent the virus from affecting the lungs. Thanks to this stroke of luck, the patients can be saved.
