Pantheon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pantheon (from ancient Greek πᾶν pān "all, total" and θεός theós "God") has four meanings:

  1. Originally the pantheon (or pantheum in Latin ) was the name for an ancient sanctuary dedicated to all gods . The Pantheon in Rome , built in Roman antiquity, is the most famous building of its kind.
  2. Today, temple-like memorial and burial sites of national personalities are also referred to as the Pantheon, in particular the Paris Panthéon , whose architecture is based on the Pantheon in Rome.
  3. In religious studies the term is also used for the totality of deities in a polytheistic religion (see world of gods ).
  4. In a figurative sense, the term can refer to a group of outstanding people, mostly in a historical context or in relation to art and literature.
