Parc Jean-Drapeau
The Parc Jean-Drapeau (formerly Parc des Îles ) is a park in the Canadian city of Montreal , which belongs to the group of Grands parcs de Montréal . It is located east of the city center and includes most of the Île Sainte-Hélène and Île Notre-Dame islands in the Saint Lawrence River . It is named after Jean Drapeau , a former mayor of Montreal. The area of the park is 218 hectares.
After the Île Sainte-Hélène was owned by the Canadian government and had been declared a park, it came to the city in 1908. The island was enlarged from 1963 onwards by backfilling the excavation that arose during the construction of the Montreal Metro , while the Île Notre-Dame was completely rebuilt. Both islands then served as the venue for the Expo 67 world exhibition .
In September 1999, Mayor Pierre Bourque renamed the park Parc Jean-Drapeau in honor of Jean Drapeau, who ruled Montreal for almost 30 years. It is administered by the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau .
