The Parcul Regele Mihai I al României (German King Michael I of Romania Park ), until 2017 Parcul Herăstrău (German Herăstrău Park ), is Bucharest's largest park in Romania . It is located in the north of the city, around Lake Herastrau .

history

Originally the area was full of swamps, but these were drained between 1930 and 1935, and the park opened in 1936. In 1951 the park was expanded. In its short history, the park was named Parcul Național , Parcul Carol al II-lea , Parcul IV Stalin and Parcul Herastrau , before it was named after the former King Mihai I , who died shortly before, at the end of 2017 .

description

The park has an area of approx. 1.1 km², of which 0.7 km² is taken by the lake. The park consists of two parts: the village museum and the public park. Small boats are allowed on the lake. The landscaping architects Eduard Pinard and Friedrich Rebhun designed the park . The avenues were laid out by Octav Dobrescu. A very special merit goes to the architect Rebhun for the arrangement of the floristic arrangements.

In 2004 the park was declared a natural monument by the Ministry of Culture in Bucharest and given the registration number BIsB-17874 in the list of natural monuments .

The park's main attractions are the annual “Expoflora” garden show, the “Insula Trandafirilor” rose island and the “Grâdina japoneza” Japanese garden. In the park there are also two open-air theaters, libraries, sports fields, landing stages on Lake Herastrau and much more.
