The park to the left of the Weser is the largest park in Bremen .

location and size

The park to the left of the Weser is located in the Bremen-Huchting district between the districts of Kirchhuchting and Grolland and the municipality of Stuhr , approx. 4 kilometers west of the center of Bremen on the left bank of the Weser . The park is cut through by the federal highway 75 and the tram line running next to it. To the north it is affected by the Bremen-Oldenburg railway line and is then supplemented by a nature reserve.

The landscape park for the preservation of the open grassland area in the Ochtum lowlands is about 239 hectares.

history

founding

Park: Middle: New Ochtum , right: Grolland , Grollander See and Stuhr , Kuhlen district

In 1958, the founding member of the association, Karl Riedemann, approached the citizens of Bremen with the demand that after the many parks on the right bank of the Weser from Bremen, a larger “city forest” between Huchting and Grolland should be designated as the “ Neustadt Bürgerpark ”. Building Senator Alfred Balcke (SPD) formulated a letter in 1963 a. a .: "... if it were up to today's ideas of urban planners, Bremen would one day have a second public park". But despite the repeated demands, next to nothing happened at first. On the other hand, in an expansion plan from 1963, a large cemetery was planned in a section between Huchting and Grolland on the B 75. In the zoning plan of Bremen from 1965, the route of a motorway was also included here, and in the " Urban Development Concept Bremen " of 1971 the motorway and a railway line at that.

In 1976 the association Bürgerpark links der Weser was founded. The municipality of Stuhr was also very interested in a positive development for a park. First of all, there was a dispute with the Bürgerpark Verein Bremen about the name and participation in the Bürgerpark tombola. One also dreamed of a federal horticultural show in this area. In 1978 the Bremen Higher Regional Court decided that the name Bürgerpark should only be used by the Bürgerparkverein. The association was now called " Association Park links der Weser ". During the time of the association's chairman Dr. Gerold Fuchs, a constructive cooperation was achieved with the Bürgerparkverein and thus participation in the Bürgerpark tombola from the 1980s onwards.

At that time there were plans in Bremen to make the existing runway of Bremen Airport usable again in its full length of 2 km. For this purpose, the Ochtum directly in front of the runway had to be relocated approx. 300 to 400 meters to the west for safety reasons. In this case, the Huchtingen politicians demand

  • that the planning of a motorway (A5) between Huchting and Grolland is abandoned,
  • that the planned freight bypass in this area will also be canceled
  • and that with the relocation of the Ochtum a landscape park between Huchting and Grolland will be developed.

Through talks between social democratic local politicians and mayor Hans Koschnick , it was possible in 1978 to ensure that precisely these demands were met; Now, in 1979, planning could finally begin for the landscape park.

After 1983

The first planting campaigns took place annually. In 1983 the Achterfeldweg and the Hermann-Allmers-Hügel were created. In 1985, the landscape plan No. 3 for this area was adopted. It followed in 1989/1990, in connection with the full utilization of the existing runway of the airport, the relocation of the Ochtum with extensive renaturation measures and significant involvement of the Bremen Water Management Office . A meandering river course with near-natural bank and shallow water zones, accompanied by paths, was created and formed the backbone of the “ Ochtumpark ”. In the landscape plan it says:

" The main priority for the development of the planning area is the preservation and further development of a cultural landscape close to settlement, characterized by grassland use ."

The park was slowly but steadily developed:

  • Initially with the Ochtum in the Grolland area and the parking zones in the Kirchhuchting area.
  • Large areas north of the B 75 followed.
  • Together with the municipality of Stuhr , green spaces between Hohenhorster See and Hohenhorster Weg were developed. Here the park association also took over a former horse farm as its residence.
  • Further paths, bridges and green spaces followed in all areas.
  • In the area adjacent to the north of the railway, measures were also taken for nature conservation with an observation hill.
  • The nature experience project at the Huchtinger Fleet at the transition from the Geest on the Hohen Horst to the Marsch, which has been planned since 2003, was implemented in several stages by 2016. A small bridge is still missing.
  • By August 2015, a path connection was established from the Achterfeldweg in the park via the Huchtinger Fleet to the Roland Center .

Current developments

Tram over the Ochtum

After around 30 years, a remarkable landscape park has been created since 1983 and is still being expanded. Since the federal highway 75 divides the park, a connection between the two parts of the park is still missing. The link with the neighboring area to the municipality of Stuhr should also be improved.

In the meantime (2017) the park consists of two thirds of agriculturally used grassland and one third of park areas with paths crossed by the Ochtum, the young forests and the bush zones, ponds, hills and fallow land. A biotope is the undeveloped inland salt point in the Rethriehen area with salt plants (halophytes); the biotope is under special protection.
The Bremen Town Musicians sculpture was created in 2018/19 by the chainsaw artist Ragna Reusch from the trunk of a beech tree on the woodland nature trail (Hohenhorster Weg at no.132, back side). The artist had already made a dragon figure from a fallen tree at another point on the woodland educational path.

The association has almost 1500 members (as of March 2019). Heinrich Welke has been the chairman of the association since 2009 .
