General election in Syria 2007

The 2007 general election in Syria was held on April 22, 2007.

The ruling Ba'ath Party received an absolute majority with 134 out of 250 seats in the People's Council , together with allied parties in the National Progressive Front and independents a two-thirds majority.

The seats for the parties on the National Progress Front increased from 167 to 169, while the seats for independent candidates decreased from 83 to 81. The election was boycotted by the opposition in exile, manipulated and described as a “farce”.

Modalities

The number of candidate entries for the parliamentary election reached 9,770 by the closing date, of which 2,293 were accepted, including 158 women. The candidates ran for 250 seats, which are divided among the 14 Syrian governorates as follows:

    About 56.12% of the 11.96 million voters cast their votes, and 30 female candidates were elected to parliament, as many as in 2003.
