Parliamentary elections in Egypt 1990

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Early parliamentary elections were held in Egypt on November 29, 1990 , with a second round for 261 seats on December 6.

It followed a referendum in October on the early dissolution of the Egyptian parliament on concerns about the legality of the 1987 general election in Egypt . However, the elections were boycotted by the Socialist Labor Party , the Socialist Liberal Party and the New Wafd Party , which claimed that the reformed electoral law may fail to guarantee free elections.

The result was a victory for the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), which won a total of 348 of the 444 seats. However, 56 of the 83 independent candidates were affiliated with the NDP, while 14 were affiliated with the New Wafd Party, 8 with the Socialist Labor Party and one with the Socialist Liberal Party. The turnout was 44.2%, but before the election it was expected that it could only be 20 to 30% 5. A total of 7,253,168 people voted, of which 350,186 were invalid or blank ballots.
