Passerelle (education)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Switzerland, the passerelle is a supplementary examination for the vocational baccalaureate and entitles you to admission to a university ( university or ETH ) in Switzerland. Universities abroad can recognize the exam on a voluntary basis, so they are not obliged to do so. The preparation for the passerelle test can either be carried out in self-study or at a school with a corresponding offer (see web links). In the spring of 2005 a passerelle test took place for the first time.

Legal basis

In 2003, the Federal Council issued the ordinance on the recognition of professional baccalaureate certificates for admission to universities as a basis for the passerelle .

Subjects and assessment

The passerelle exam is taken in the following subjects:

The subjects German, second national language or English, as well as mathematics are examined in writing and orally. The natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, on the other hand, are only available in writing. The performance in the individual subjects is given to the nearest half grades (1 = worst, 6 = best, below 4 = unsatisfactory). All five grades have the same weight and are added to a total number of points. To pass the exam, at least 20 points must be achieved, a maximum of two grades below 3.5 and none below 2.

Various state and private schools offer preparation for the passerelle exams within 1 to 1.5 years. In order to be admitted as a school to take the passerelle test, it must be authorized to take the Matura exams. The exams in cantonal schools are taken in-house; Students from private schools take the federal examination in Bern . The passerelle examinations of the cantonal schools are drawn up jointly by them; it can differ from the federal one.

In the past, only one of the natural science subjects was examined. Whether biology, chemistry or physics is tested was decided by lot. In 2005 chemistry was drawn, in 2006 biology at federal level and cantonal chemistry. This procedure was opposed from different sides. So the Passerelle 06/07 started with the belief that all scientific subjects had to be completed. After the conference of the cantonal directors of education insisted on the procedure, a subject was drawn in 2007 on May 2nd. It is physics at the federal and cantonal level. From 2008 all 3 subjects will be examined.

The exam can be repeated once if it is not passed. Subjects that received at least a 5 on the first attempt do not need to be repeated. The success rate is around 70% of the students taking the exam. The success rate from the beginning of the course to graduation is around 40%.

Information for 2009

As of autumn 2009, the new guidelines will apply to all candidates (including those taking part in the examinations held from autumn 2009). According to the new guidelines, biology, chemistry and physics are tested in three equal parts of 100 minutes each.
